Nostra Aetate, AbrahamResumo
Sixty years after its promulgation, the declaration Nostra Aetate remains a decisive milestone in interreligious relations, especially between Christians and Jews. Drafted during the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the document expresses a renewed posture of the Catholic Church toward other religious traditions, with particular emphasis on recognizing the Jewish heritage within Christianity. Paragraph 4 of Nostra Aetate, in particular, acknowledges the strong bond between Christians and Jews, affirming that
Christian faith is rooted in the biblical tradition of ancient Israel, as the text declares: “The Church, therefore, cannot forget that she received the revelation of the Old Testament through the people with whom God in His inexpressible mercy established the Ancient Covenant” (SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL, Nostra Aetate, 1965, no. 4).
